We reached Oxford a tad earlier than expected - oops, looks like we were really overly-enthusiastic for our tour - and so we had some time to spare at the MINI Gift Shop!
When it was finally time for our tour to start, we were greeted by our enthusiastic tour guide, Terry! I had initially thought that we would be traveling around the factory by foot, however, we were brought on a small van around different parts of the factory - it is no surprise to me then when I found out that the total area of just the printshop is 38,430 square metres.
Did you know that no 2 MINIs are exactly the same? This is because MINIs can be personally customized - a customer can pre-order his/her car, including the number of doors, the colors and any additional features he/she hopes the car would have. We later learnt that in order to meet the current demand level, the robots have to work for 22 hours per day - they only stop operating from 4am to 6am everyday, where they undergo maintenance to ensure that they would be able to run smoothly the next day!
It was definitely a good end to wrap up a busy term at school, and I am already looking forward to our next MES trip to the EDF Nuclear Power Plant! Hope to see all of you there too!
