Autosport International is THE racing car show, held every year in January at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre.
In 2013, a small group of UCL students experienced the show, which featured almost all forms of motor racing. With various reputed manufacturers in attendance, our students were exposed to engineering technology in practice. Cutting edge parts and prototype designs were on display, with many companies also showcasing their centerpiece vehicles.
During the day, multiple showings of an automotive display were conducted – everything from Monster trucks to Reliant Robins executed precise maneuvers and crashes in front of a live audience. The strong smell of high octane fuel and exhaust fumes extended to the corners of the arena, further enhanced by the aroma of shredding rubber. Note to remember bringing earplugs for the next time.
Notable exhibits included Caterham’s Experience – one could pay a small amount of money to go for a passenger ride round a drift circuit.
For a slightly larger amount of money, one could get into the driver’s seat to try it for themselves.
The rest of the day was spent talking to companies and learning about their products, as well as establishing connections in the industry. Our students also spent much time promoting our department, and our very own Formula Student team to various big names in hope of technical partnerships and support. Keep your eyes peeled for developments in this area!
